Hey guys, this line opened at Middle Tennessee -3 and pretty much stayed there until earlier this morning, at which time the line dropped to Middle Tennessee -2 1/2. This is a pretty significant move, considering that it takes a substantial amount of money to move the line off of the 3. When the number moved I checked with two different sources to see where the public money was. One source had 68% of the public money on Middle Tennessee St. , while the other had 80% of the public money on Middle Tennessee. This makes Florida Atlantic an obvious Sharp Money Move. My job now is to try and back this play with obvious stats and trends that would help support the play on Florida Atlantic. We know that Florida Atlantic has a coaching edge with the great Howard Schnellenberger calling the shots. Florida Atlantic is also the reigning Sun Belt Conference Champions, and have last years Sun Belt Player of the Year in Rusty Smith running the offense. Florida Atlantic opened the season on the road against powerhouse Texas(L), followed by a win at home against UAB. Then they hit the road once again playing at Michigan St.(L) and Minnesota(L). Middle Tennessee has played 4 games also, getting a solid win at home against a decent Maryland squad, but have losses against Kentucky, as well as conference losses to Troy and Arkansas St. It's hard to compare stats for this game considering that Florida Atlantic has played a much tougher schedule, but one thing worth mentioning is that Middle Tennessee has failed to go over 100 yards rushing against both Troy and Arkansas St., both teams of which are members of the Sun Belt Conference. Of course Middle Tennessee has better looking defensive stats, but has played a much easier schedule. Of importance here is that Schnellenberger is very good when playing inside the conference, going 7-2 against the spread in his last 9 games, while Middle Tennessee St. has struggled to a 0-4 record in their last 4 games against conference opponents. Finally, let's not forget that this is a Prime Time ESPN2 match up in front of a Televised national audience. Middle Tennessee had just over 22,000 fans in their previous home games against Troy and Maryland. After going 0-2 in conference play and 1-3 to start the season, look for about the same number or possibly less for this nationally televised event.

Two teams that are smoking hot will be going at each other tonight. The Phillies have won 7 straight, while the Marlins have won 8 straight. Both teams are mathematically still alive for a post season spot, but the Marlins may need a little help, even if they win out. The Marlins will be sending Josh Johnson to the mound, while the Phillies will be relying on Brett Myers. Johnson pitched 6 innings of scoreless ball the last time he faced the Phillies, and has pitched well against them this season with a 1.42 Era in two starts. Johnson is 4-0 with a 3.03 Era in his night starts this season, while Myers has struggled when pitching on the road. Myers is 3-7 with a 5.46 Era in his road starts, and hasn't fared well against the Marlins, going 6-9 with a 5.04 Era in 21 starts against the Marlins. A key stat for this match up is that the Phillies are 0-5 in Myers last 5 road starts vs the Marlins. Now Myers gets to face a Marlins team that has won 8 straight and is hitting .313 while scoring 8.60 runs a game over their last 5 vs righties. We have a very good shot of pulling this one off with a small dog. See you guys on Monday. No baseball over the weekend.

Tennessee may be better off that Vince Young hurt his knee. A veteran Kerry Collins steps in and should be able to provide a much needed leadership role for a team that may have been distracted by all that happened with Young this week. The running game netted 137 yards last week, but with Young under center, the passing game struggled. If fact Young had just 16 passing yards in the first half last week, and Collins stepped in and provided 65 yards in going 2/2 in his short stint to finish the game. Baltimore was able to shut down the Offensive passing machine of the Bengals, and although I don't look for another disappointing game from Palmer, he will have his hands full against this Titans defense that limited Jacksonville to just 33 rushing yards, and sacked the quarterback 7 times while forcing 3 turnovers.

#308 Syracuse Orange -4 1/2

Syracuse still has a few question marks going into today's game against Akron. One of the main concerns will be if they will be able to move the ball on the ground. They managed 122 rushing yards last week against the Wildcats of Northwestern, but that was against a Northwestern team that basically had no rush defense whatsoever last season. Either Northwestern has gotten better, or Syarcuse has a weak running attack. We will find out today, as the Orange take on an Akron team that gave up over 400 rushing yard to a much improved Wisconsin team. Wisconsin had so much success rushing the ball that they only had to attempt 10 passes last week. Both teams have veteran quarterbacks, but I look for Syarcuse to come out on top. Losing to a Big 10 opponent is one thing, but losing at home to an Akron team that went 4-8 last season will cost you your job, especially if you are on the hot seat.
