One key factor in how well a team will do in the first couple of weeks is to look and see how well they scored runs in their last 10-15 Pre-Season games! That is exactly what we are looking at here tonight! Minnesota struggled to score runs over their last 13 games with 5 runs being the most they scored in that stretch, while being held to 3 or less in 8 of those 13 games. The Twins traded Torii Hunter to the Angels and are expecting Justin Morneau to shoulder the load in Hunter's absence. Morneau finished the Spring Pre-Season on an 0-8 slump while batting .200 for the entire Pre-Season.
The Angels had no problems scoring runs during the Spring Season, and in fact scored 5 or more runs in 11 of their last 17 games played. They scored 3 or less in only 4 of those games!! Hunter, along with Guerrero, Anderson, and Matthews should continue to put up impressive numbers moving into the regular season.
So we know what to expect from both offenses, but what about the starting pitchers? Jered Weaver gets the start for the Angels after having a great Spring Season that saw him allow only 4 earned runs over 26 1/3 innings. Weaver has faired well against the Twins in past matchups with a 2-0 record and 2.11 ERA. Livan Hernandez gets the start for Minnesota. Hernandez struggled this spring with a 6.38 ERA but has posted a 3.55 ERA while facing the Angels only twice in his career. Hernandez is no longer the dominating Power Pitcher he once was, and until he proves otherwise I will continue to play against him when the opportunity seems beneficial!
